Sara DornBrook’s story is a testament to resilience, love, and an unyielding determination to inspire others. From navigating personal and professional challenges to creating ripples of change through her platform in pageantry, Sara embodies the beauty of turning struggles into strength. Here, we celebrate Sara’s journey and her commitment to self-care, family, and her beloved community.
Rooted in Family: The Power of Togetherness
Sara met her husband at just 16 years old. Now, nearly 23 years later, their bond is stronger than ever. Married for over 17 years, their family is a vibrant blend of love and laughter. Sara’s 14-year-old daughter Reese, her 11-year-old son Brady, and her 20-year-old nephew Joseph bring joy and purpose to her life.
Joseph, who is autistic, participates in a life-skills program that provides work experience—a testament to Sara’s support for inclusivity and empowerment. “Life in our house is never dull,” Sara shares with a laugh. “We make goofy TikToks, prank one another, and focus on creating memories that remind us to keep life light and fun.”
A Fire That Couldn’t Extinguish Her Spirit
Sara’s salon, Desire to Inspire, was more than a business—it was a dream brought to life through years of hard work. When a devastating fire engulfed the building housing her salon, Sara faced an unimaginable loss.
“Everything I worked for in the past 18 years was gone,” she recalls. “The hardest part wasn’t the loss of belongings, but the memories—the remodels, the growth, the sacrifices away from my family. It was heartbreaking.” Yet, amid the ashes, Sara found hope.
The outpouring of support from our community was overwhelming. People came together in ways we never expected. It was a reminder that no matter what happens, it’s going to be okay.
Her advice for anyone facing similar trauma? “Cry, lean on others, accept help, and take one thing at a time. Allow yourself to process the emotions, but never lose sight of what truly matters.”
Pageantry: A Platform for Impact
Sara’s pageant journey began at 19 when she pushed through anxiety to compete for the title of Miss Slinger Super Speedway, eventually setting a record by winning the crown four times. Her foray into pageantry was transformational, igniting a passion for service and sisterhood.
“I wanted to be the kind of person who inspires others, like Anna Huf inspired me,” Sara shares. “That experience changed my life, and my motto, ‘Live to Inspire,’ was born. It even became the name of my salon!”
Fast-forward to today, Sara uses pageantry to raise awareness for Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a cause close to her heart. Her husband’s battle with PKD led Sara to become his kidney donor, a journey that inspired her to write We’re Going to Be Okay, a children’s book from her kids’ perspective on living through a transplant process.
Through her advocacy, Sara has raised over $14,000 for the PKD Foundation, quadrupled sponsorships, and grown her platform as the Wisconsin State Walk Ambassador.
Self-Care: The Foundation of Strength
Sara credits her ability to juggle family, business, and advocacy to her commitment to self-care across multiple dimensions:
Physical:
“After the transplant, I became more attuned to my body’s needs. I prioritize sleep, stay hydrated, and even found a tiny bit of joy in exercise—something I never thought I’d say!”
Mental:
“Journaling has been my go-to for 13 years. I also love creating photo albums for my kids and learning new things—like solving a Rubik’s Cube!”
Emotional:
“Helping others uplifts me. When I raise others up, it naturally shifts my mindset and brings me peace.”
Spiritual:
“My family’s faith reminds me to stay grounded. They show me a perspective that keeps me centered.”
Social/Community:
“I live in the nicest town ever! The way people showed up after the fire was extraordinary. I’m so proud to be part of such a supportive community.”
Professional:
“I’ve learned to set boundaries. Work ends at 6 p.m. so I can focus on family and personal goals. That balance keeps me energized.”
“Teamwork Makes the Dream Work”
From her salon motto to her personal philosophy, Sara believes in the power of collaboration. “Whether it’s rebuilding after a fire, advocating for PKD, or creating joyful family memories, nothing is impossible when we come together,” she says.
Sara’s journey, filled with trials and triumphs, reminds us of the resilience within us all. Her authenticity and passion continue to inspire those around her.
“No matter how hard life gets,” she concludes, “it’s going to be okay. Keep going, lean on others, and never stop striving to inspire.”
