As we recognize Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, it’s essential to amplify the voices of those who have faced life’s darkest moments and emerged stronger. One such voice belongs to Heather Kwak, a woman whose journey of struggle, survival, and transformation serves as an inspiration to all. Heather’s heartfelt story, filled with raw authenticity, is one of perseverance, healing, and the power of sharing your truth.
“I Wanted to Be the Person Brave Enough to Talk About the Things That Nearly Destroyed Me.”
-Heather Kwak
At just 12 years old, Heather’s battle with mental health began. Struggling with ADHD, depression, and anxiety, she faced bullying that would have crushed many. “I had a student start a Facebook page supporting me ending my own life,” Heather recalls. Shockingly, over 200 people left comments urging her to give up. The pain was overwhelming. By 16, Heather had been through multiple mental health programs, severely overmedicated, and grappling with suicidal thoughts.
“I just did not want to feel the pain I was in any longer,” she says. At 16, she attempted to take her own life and was admitted to an inpatient program. Yet, that moment became a pivotal turning point for Heather. After leaving the program, she decided to fight—to overcome the darkness and find purpose in her life.
Finding Strength in Adversity
Despite relentless bullying and being told she’d never graduate, Heather pushed forward. “I joined cheerleading despite everyone always saying I was too big to be a cheerleader,” she shares. Through cheerleading, she found a place where she belonged, and for the first time, she discovered a glimmer of hope. It wasn’t an easy road—there were still struggles and setbacks—but Heather pressed on.
“I remember the people that went out of their way to support me, to guide me, to mentor me and to listen,” Heather reflects. With the support of others and her own determination, she graduated from high school, lost the weight, and began a new chapter of her life. But more importantly, Heather transformed her pain into power.
“You Are So Loved, and Your Story Matters.”
Today, Heather stands tall as an advocate for mental health and suicide prevention. Her platform, Fight to Overcome, tells the story of her battle with depression, bullying, and surviving a suicide attempt. It’s a story she shares with over 1,500 students, aiming to spread awareness, break stigmas, and inspire others to seek help and never give up.
“I’ve found a purpose in what I’ve been through,” Heather explains. “I’ve learned there are so many that struggle that never say anything.” That is why Heather continues to share her story with schools, communities, and as a board member for 71ReasonsAndMore, a program dedicated to funding mental health initiatives in her county.
But Heather’s journey has not been without loss. Two years ago, she lost her father, a devastating blow that tested her emotional strength. “Some days I’m still not sure if I’ll ever be okay again,” she admits. Yet, even in the depths of grief, Heather has found purpose in her pain. “I know I can help others through what I’ve been through, so even when I have to fight bad thoughts, I know I am here for a reason.”
A Platform for Change
Heather’s platform, Fight to Overcome, is more than just a message—it’s a movement. As a keynote speaker at Oswego High School since 2021, Heather continues to share her experiences, hoping to fill auditoriums with those who need to hear her voice. “I want to be the person I needed when I was younger,” Heather says. And she’s doing just that.
Through her work, she encourages others to seek help, to share their stories, and to know that they are never alone. Heather’s dream is to continue expanding her reach, one day speaking to thousands about her journey and giving hope to those in need.
Embracing Life’s Simple Joys
When Heather isn’t busy inspiring others, she finds solace in life’s simpler pleasures—spending time with her three emotional support chickens, writing poetry, and painting. These creative outlets give her a sense of peace and grounding, reminding her of the beauty in life, even after hardship.
“You Are Not Alone.”
As Heather Kwak reflects on her life today, she knows that every struggle, every tear, and every battle was part of a larger purpose. “I want others to know they are not alone. I am always here for anyone that has ever felt or gone through what I’ve been through.” It’s been 10 years since Heather tried to take her own life, and now, she uses her story to inspire others. Her message is clear: You are loved, your story matters, and you are never alone.
For those fighting silent battles, Heather’s story serves as a reminder that there is hope, even in the darkest moments. Through her resilience, compassion, and unyielding spirit, Heather Kwak is showing the world that no matter what you’ve been through, you can overcome—and you can help others do the same.
If you or someone you know is struggling, don’t hesitate to seek help. You are worth it.
